This book is on my list, which is growing quite long, once I get some funds.Reading about resistance has always been a therapeutic act for me, because it realigns and refocuses things for me. Resistance is a necessary act for POC, whether it be within the personal day to day experiences or within a collective voice and presence. How that resistance looks can vary across a wide spectrum of manifestations. So no, everyone is not a part of a burgeoning or establish political organization, or manages food banks for their communities but that does not mean resistance is not happening at some level. So shout outs to the WOC who challenged a racist/misogynistic remark today, or the WOC/MOC who teaches their children factual history or the multitude of African descendant brothers and sisters who create art, despite being surrounded by physical, institutional and psychological violence…it goes on and on
“It is not easy to give a speech when we have our mother lying in bed and an assassin waiting to take her life. Such is the present situation of our country, of our Puerto Rico; the assassin is the power of the United States of North America. One cannot give a speech while the newborns of our country are dying of hunger, while the adolescents of our homeland are being poisoned with the worst virus, slavery. While the adults of our homeland must leave Lares (their homeland) in fear and don’t even have exit to other countries different from the enemy power that binds us. They must go to the United States to be slaves of the economic powers, of the tyrants of our country, they are the slaves who go to Michigan, out of need, to be scorned and outraged and kicked. One cannot give a speech easily while the tyrant has the power to tear the sons right out of the hearts of Puerto Rican mothers to send to Korea, into hell to be killed, to be murderers of innocent Koreans, to die covering the front for the yanqui: enemies of our country, to return insane to their own people…it is not easy. Our blood boils and patience beats at our hearts and tells me that patience must end, must disappear, and that the day of Lares must be the day of Lares, that is the day of the Puerto Rican Revolution.”
Pedro-Albizu Campos speech in Lares September 23,1950
It is about resistance. Its about asserting your humanity. Its about not asking but claiming your right, to not only live, but to flourish and ascend. Por que lo llevo en la sangre. It is not a passive act,our ancestors have shown us that, that is why we fight, why we confront those barriers and ideologies which constrict and bind. I feel it is a responsibility and I am genetically coded for this.
